In a national first, pet care platform PetCloud has launched a microchip registry designed to give Australian pet owners control over their contact information.

Pet owners can now either register their pets directly or sync their existing PetCloud profile with the new registry. This approach aims to keep microchip records accurate without the need for manual updates.

Deb Webber, CEO of PetCloud, said that for years, outdated microchip data has been one of the biggest barriers to reuniting lost pets with their families.

“We’re proud to launch a first for Australia — Pet Management platform, plus a Microchip Registry where pet owners are in control and their data is easily kept current through a simple, opt-in process.”

According to Animal Welfare League Queensland, about 25 per cent of microchipped cats brought to shelters have outdated owner details, significantly reducing the chance of reunification. While dogs are returned at higher rates (60–70 per cent), outdated data remains a concern.

“Lost pets are a national problem, and the current system is broken,” said Webber. “We’re giving Australians a better way to protect their pets and be found faster when it matters most.”

The digital registry complies with privacy standards and is designed to integrate with PetCloud’s broader network, including vets, breeders, councils, and other pet professionals. PetCloud aims to register over 300,000 pets in the next year.
