A Queensland couple has launched a line of functional food supplements for dogs called Vital Dog, inspired by their four-year-old Rottweiler, Nala.
Adam and Alana Hamilton drew on their expertise in health sciences – Alana as a naturopath and Adam as a certified nutritionist for both humans and canines – developed supplements to improve Nala’s wellbeing and promote longevity.
“Nala struggled for over a year with stubborn ear infections and a shoulder injury from doing zoomies on the deck – classic Nala,” said Adam. “The medications prescribed by her vet had mediocre results and caused side effects like digestive issues and a lull in her mood. We couldn’t find supplements that met our standards, so we thought, why not create something ourselves to support her healing naturally?”
The couple crafted an all-natural, nutrient-rich supplement in their kitchen. Within four weeks, they saw significant improvements.
“Nala’s ear scratching and head shaking reduced significantly, and her limp began to fade. Within eight weeks, she was completely symptom-free—her mood improved, her coat shone brighter, and she was more energetic than ever,” Adam shared.
Nala’s transformation impressed her veterinarian, Dr Che Phillips, who highlighted the benefits of functional supplements in complementing a balanced diet.
“Certain functional ingredients, like probiotics, offer a range of health benefits beyond the gastrointestinal system, supporting overall health and even mood,” explained Dr Phillips. “Meal toppers can address chronic health conditions like skin allergies and provide tailored nutrition.”
Dr Phillips emphasised that while functional supplements like Vital Dog may enhance canine health, owners should seek veterinary consultation for significant health concerns.
“Supplements may complement veterinary treatment or support general wellbeing when no serious condition is identified,” she said.
All-natural, Australian-made, and free from synthetic additives, Vital Dog supplements target up to eight areas of canine wellness, including gut health, joint mobility, allergy support, and dental hygiene.
The range includes:
- Multi-Benefit Wellness Blend: A comprehensive formula supporting vulnerable areas as dogs age.
- Advanced Gut Health: Packed with 5 billion live probiotics per serving to promote digestive health.
- Advanced Allergy & Itch: Formulated with probiotics and anti-inflammatory ingredients to address skin, ear, and paw issues.
“Dog parents who participated in our pre-launch feeding study gave Vital Dog meal toppers a perceived enjoyment rating of 95 per cent,” said Adam.
Vital Dog’s eco-friendly, recyclable tin packaging reflects the Hamiltons’ commitment to sustainability. The supplements are available for $54.99.
