There is a boom in backyard chicken ownership across Australia, with more than 400,000 Australians now keeping hens at home.
Fuelled by rising egg prices and a growing interest in sustainable living, chickens are both an eco-friendly source of fresh eggs and a surprisingly engaging family pet.
Emma Collett, National Live Manager at Petstock, said certain chicken breeds can lay approximately 250 to 300 eggs per year, which works out to about four to six eggs per week.
“Chickens also bring a surprising amount of personality, making for great pets. Renowned for their intelligence, chickens can recognise up to 100 different faces, including both humans and fellow chickens. They’re even known to experience dreams, further highlighting their complex cognitive abilities.”
The appeal of backyard chickens also includes natural pest control, garden fertiliser, and companionship. However, Petstock is urging prospective owners to understand the responsibilities.
“Chickens require proper care and attention, including a suitable coop and run, a balanced diet, and regular health checks,” said Collett. “Responsible chicken ownership also includes managing waste, keeping up to date with vaccines and parasite control, and making sure they have a secure home as they love to roam.”
Petstock notes that local council rules vary, particularly in metropolitan areas, so research is essential before setting up a backyard coop.
