Animal Medicines Australia is using World Immunisation Week (24–30 April) to highlight the role of animal vaccines in protecting health across people, animals, and the environment.
The organisation says animal immunisation is vital to public health, biosecurity and sustainable food production, especially as part of a “One Health” approach – a concept recognising the connection between human, animal, and environmental health.
Ben Stapley, Executive Director of AMA, said vaccinating animals – whether livestock, companion animals, or wildlife – protects their health and welfare and is vital in preventing the spread of zoonotic diseases to humans.
“As we’ve seen through recent global health events, human and animal health are inextricably linked. A One Health approach, which recognises the connections between people, animals and the environment, is key to building a more resilient and sustainable future.”
AMA says vaccines reduce the need for antibiotics, improve animal welfare and support more sustainable farming systems.
“Animal health professionals, veterinarians and farmers work every day to ensure our animals are protected through timely vaccination. Their work is fundamental to a safe and reliable food supply, to biosecurity, and to the wellbeing of animals in our care,” Stapley said.
The group is encouraging the public to learn more about immunisation and support science-based strategies to improve global health.
