Australians have been revealed to spend $4 billion a year on their pets, an impressive $750 million jump from two years ago.

A survey by grooming company Wahl revealed that 40 per cent of Australians spend between $12,000 and $24,000 a year on their dog and 28 per cent spend up to $100 a visit at professional groomers.

Shaun Geddes, General Manager of Wahl Australia, said that because Australians see their dogs as valued members of the family, they are happy to splash out on making sure they have the tastiest food, the highest quality grooming products, and plenty of chew toys.

It was also found that 37 per cent of owners buy clothes for their dogs, 49 per cent groom them at least once a week, and 88 per cent believe dogs should have the same rights as humans.

In celebration of Australia’s love for their pets, Wahl has announced the search for Australia’s Next Top Pet Model, with over $8,500 in prizes on offer. Wahl will also be donating over $2,000 worth of pet grooming products to the Animal Welfare League (AWL).

“We’re looking for Australia’s canine supermodel. It’s about ditching the catwalk and introducing the dogwalk!” said Geddes.

Head to the Wahl website for entry details or post a photo of your dog on Instagram and tag @wahlaustralia and #wahlnextpetmodel.
