The Geelong Animal Welfare Society (GAWS) is offering free desexing and microchipping for 120 pet cats as part of its ‘Fix a Feline Friend for Free’ program.
Eligible residents from the City of Greater Geelong, Surf Coast, Bellarine Peninsula, Golden Plains or Queenscliffe shires who hold a Centrelink pension or concession card can apply for a voucher through the National Desexing Network.
Helen Cocks, CEO of GAWS, said the program is part of the organisation’s focus on supporting responsible pet ownership.
“The wellbeing of both our community and pets is important to GAWS and we are pleased to be able to offer this free cat desexing and microchipping service.
“This initiative will help those who would like to desex their cat but are not in the financial position to do so. It will improve the health and wellbeing of the cat, reduce the number of unwanted cat pregnancies and reduce pressure on already crowded animal shelters.”
Dr Ruth Dover, Head Veterinarian at GAWS, said desexing brings several benefits.
“Desexed cats often live longer, healthier lives because they are less prone to certain health issues and behaviours that can put them at risk.
“Desexing your cat can lower the risk of some infections and cancers. Cats who are desexed are less likely to engage in aggressive behaviour. It can reduce spraying, yowling, excessive grooming and roaming.
“Generally, desexed cats are more content and relaxed.”
Supported by Animal Welfare Victoria. The initiative runs until 31 July and aims to assist financially disadvantaged cat owners. To apply, eligible residents can call the National Desexing Network on 1300 368 992.
