IndePet members gathered in Hobart from 18 May to 22 May for a few days of learning, networking, and fun at the annual IndePet conference.

With a packed agenda of market insights, supplier engagement, and hands-on activities aimed at strengthening the sector, the event began Sunday with a market overview from Tia Wishart, Business Development Manager at IndePet. This was followed by a business update from IndePet and insights from the organisation’s latest member and supplier survey.

Among the standout sessions was a keynote from marketing strategist Damian Young, who challenged attendees to rethink customer behaviour and market research.

“Independent pet retailers might be small in size, but this conference proved we’re big on ideas, big on heart, and even bigger on barking up the right tree.

“It’s clear that independent retail isn’t just alive, it’s thriving. It’s not just about cats and dogs, it’s about every creature we share our lives with, from birds to bearded dragons. This community shows up for all of them, with expertise, and empathy,” said Young.

Breakout sessions allowed members to engage in smaller, focused discussions with suppliers, while the trade hall offered a vibrant space for networking and exploring new deals.

John Counihan, IndePet Chair, praised the event’s tone and execution.

“Our members, our suppliers and invited speakers engaged together in a very warm productive manner. The speakers were very relevant and clear in their presentations, much was clarified and learnt.

“The overall vibe was inclusive, respectful and connected. It was an honour to be involved with such an amazing group of attendees.”

Day two featured further workshops, including another interactive session with Young, an Industry Insight forum, and the highly active “Amazing Race and Elevate Games” — showcasing teamwork and competitive spirit.

The conference wrapped up with a Q&A panel of pet industry leaders, followed by a closing session on customer loyalty by Adam Posner. The final night featured a Titanic-themed three-course Captain’s Dinner and the annual awards, capped off with a “Sailor’s After Party.”

Matthew Freeman from MasterPet said it was an amazing week.

“I had the privilege of talking about ‘elevating through innovation’ and more specifically about Black Hawk’s ongoing journey of innovation as we aspire to meet the needs of pet parents every day.”

IndePet extended thanks to all speakers, suppliers, sponsors, and members for contributing to the success of the conference.
