Wildlife carers across New South Wales will soon be formally recognised for their contributions, with the launch of a new awards program by the New South Wales Wildlife Council (NWC).
Announced to mark the NWC’s 20th anniversary, the awards include The Audrey Award and the Wildlife Volunteer of the Year Award. The program celebrates individuals and groups for their leadership, innovation, and excellence in wildlife conservation and rehabilitation.
Sonja Elwood, Acting Chair of the NWC, said the awards provide much-needed recognition for those who dedicate their time to wildlife care.
“The NWC Awards program provides a valuable opportunity for individuals and groups in NSW to gain some recognition for their valued, ongoing contributions to the wildlife sector.
“The nominees encourage us to continue pursuing excellence, leadership, innovation and wildlife conservation today and into the future.”
The biennial Audrey Koosmen OAM Award honours the late Audrey Koosmen, a pioneer of volunteer wildlife care in NSW who dedicated almost 60 years to the sector. Koosmen founded one of the state’s first wildlife rehabilitation groups and was a founding member of the NWC before her passing in December 2024.
All nominees will receive certificates of commendation and may be re-nominated in future years.
The awards will be presented by NSW Environment Minister Penny Sharpe on 28 November 2025 as part of the NWC’s 20th anniversary celebration in Sydney.
