Australian dog food company Scratch has launched the country’s first-ever raw and frozen dog food.

Designed to deliver the optimal diet of raw meat, organs, and vegetables, Scratch Raw offers pet owners a mess-free, nutritionally complete solution for their furry companions.

The new product, crafted at Scratch’s state-of-the-art Melbourne facility, uses diced, blanched, and frozen high-quality ingredients, including beef chuck, organ meats, salmon, kale, zucchini, and sweet potatoes. This approach locks in nutrients and eliminates the need for synthetic additives often found in other dog food options.

“One thing that people are struck by is how it looks like real food. And it is: Scratch Raw is literally normal food, with all the colours of the rainbow, just as it should be,” said Mike Halligan, co-founder of Scratch.

Unlike many raw or lightly cooked dog food brands that rely on “pet-grade” ingredients, Scratch prioritises human-grade standards.

“Our priority when creating Raw was to treat it the same way as human food preparation is treated. Bags get popped straight in the freezer and ship frozen, ensuring that bacteria doesn’t grow on the raw meat and that maximum nutrients are locked in.”

For pet owners wary of raw diets due to concerns over mess or bacteria, Scratch Raw is a game changer. The product is as convenient to serve as pouring cereal, with no need for extensive meal prep or cleanup.

Dr. Samantha Rulli, Scratch’s in-house vet, highlighted the innovative “nutriblock” included in the product.

“The secret to perfectly nailing all of a dog’s nutritional needs without any add-on powders or tablets is found in our signature ‘nutriblock’. It’s a mixed cube of human-grade natural ingredients like kale, wheat germ, bone flour and more, to add all of the nutrients that meat and vegetables alone don’t provide,” she said.

This launch is a major development for the 51 per cent of Australian dog owners who need to switch their pets’ diets due to health issues caused by existing options. With Scratch Raw, these owners can provide a bioavailable, synthetic-free, and nutritionally complete diet that mimics nature without compromise.

Currently available in Melbourne and Sydney, Scratch Raw is priced at $157 for 8.25kg with free shipping, with plans to expand to other Australian cities soon.
