As record flooding continues to devastate parts of New South Wales, pet insurer PetSure has announced an emergency extension of cover for policyholders affected by the disaster.
The flood emergency spans from Cessnock to Kempsey, with more than 130 State Emergency Service warnings in place. In Taree, the Manning River rose above six metres, breaking previous records. Tens of thousands of residents have been isolated, with widespread evacuations and rescue operations underway.
In response, PetSure is offering extended coverage for pet health complications caused by the floods to all current policyholders until 30 June 2025. This includes emergency boarding at licenced kennels and catteries for displaced pet owners. The company said this will apply “regardless of policy type,” and the usual sub-limits, excess or benefit percentage will not apply for these boarding claims.
“PetSure will provide cover for pet health complications for the insured pet, regardless of policy type or coverage level, that arise as a result of the NSW floods,” the company stated.
The insurer is also waiving waiting periods for weather-related health issues. Pre-existing conditions that are directly worsened by the floods will be eligible under an ex-gratia initiative. However, ongoing treatment for such conditions after the event will revert to standard policy rules.
PetSure customers who are unable to reach a vet due to isolation can use the LiveVet telehealth service at no extra cost. The service connects users with Australian-registered vets via video call or chat through the Pet Portal.
Australians without a PetSure policy can access similar vet telehealth support via services like VetChat, though fees may apply.
To qualify for the extended support, customers must be existing PetSure policyholders, live in or near a flood-affected area, and provide documentation showing their pet’s health or boarding needs are directly linked to the extreme weather.
Claims can be submitted by emailing invoices and a policy number to help@petsure.com.au. PetSure said claims will be processed within 3–5 business days if all information is provided.
